Our Story
Kano'j, a name steeped in Maya heritage, derives from two profound concepts. The "Ka" in Kano'j comes from "Kajib," symbolizing the four cardinal points, while "No'j" means hummingbird, which represents wisdom. Together, Kano'j embodies the mission of spreading knowledge to all corners of the world.

Nestled in the scenic Aldea Chajbal, near Quiché, Guatemala, Kano'j was founded in 2005 by a group of ten young individuals of Maya origin. Their vision was clear and ambitious: to provide scholarships for students, enabling them to pursue secondary education. These scholarships were not just financial; they also offered housing within the farm's facilities.
In its early days, Kano'j was a modest operation without a restaurant or a dedicated kitchen. Yet, the founders' dedication bore fruit, helping 140 students achieve their educational dreams through the scholarship program.

However, by 2017, Kano'j faced a significant challenge—a decline in donations. In response, the founders pivoted towards self-sustainability. They constructed a restaurant and a kitchen, and began offering lodging services. This transformation not only ensured the farm's survival but also laid the groundwork for a future where Kano'j can once again provide scholarships to deserving students.
Kano'j's journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to education. As they continue to grow, the dream of spreading knowledge to the four corners of the world remains at the heart of everything they do.
